2014 marks the 20th anniversary of the ending of apartheid and the beginning of the transition to democracy in South Africa. Since 1994, South Africa has embarked on many reforms focused on social service delivery to the most disadvantaged members of the population, such as national education, housing schemes and social service funds. However, many challenges remain. What are the main obstacle facing the country in the post-apartheid era? Will South Africa be able to surmount these and sustain its democratic development henceforth?
